Ecuador Flower Production Navigates Recent Climate Fluctuations

Recent conversations with flower growers across Ecuador reveal how shifting weather patterns are impacting production nationwide. Growers in the southern region report that production has slowed due to cold days experienced over the past week. Meanwhile, farms in the northern areas are also facing climate challenges, but are managing to fulfill their orders.

The weather pattern has been notably erratic since December. From December through mid-January, conditions were unusually warm. However, the last six days have brought a significant cooldown. During the first weeks of January, high temperatures pushed production output considerably higher. Now, with cooler conditions and average humidity levels exceeding 85%, there’s an increased risk of disease development in the flowers.

In the chart, we can see the difference in temperatures recorded in week 3 compared to week 5. On average, temperatures were almost two degrees lower than in week 3. This has an impact on the accumulation of growing degree days, and for this reason, flower availability may be slightly reduced this week.

However, conditions are improving and this should help accelerate production. For this week in Cayambe, average temperatures are expected to be around 16⁰C with 50% chance of rain.

While Ecuador doesn’t experience extreme weather conditions, the country does face sudden climate fluctuations that can significantly impact agricultural production. These rapid changes, as evidenced by the recent temperature shifts in Cayambe, require constant adaptation and careful environmental management from growers to maintain quality and meet market demands.
